Like EW I will compare this sci-fi YA series to The Hunger Games first movie: The Hunger Games earned $67.3 on it's first friday on March, 2012 and made it's way to a $152.5 million dollar weekend. The movie Divergent, reportedly cost $85 million to produce, and buy the looks of things could set for a $65 million dollar opening weekend.
Shailene Woodley on Why She wanted the Job:
"There were many reasons I wanted to do this," Woodley says. "Partly because it's entertaining and when you're reading the book, you are taken on a journey you can relate to. But the other thing I found very appealing about it was the fact you have this strong female in the lead who wasn't inherently badass by birth but had to work at developing her story."(Quote courtesy of: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/battle-ready-shailene-woodley-turns-warrior-in-divergent-20140322-35ax2.html#ixzz2wlbwakMa)
Movie Summary:
"Divergent" is set in a dystopian Chicago where people are divided into factions based on their personality types: Members of the Dauntless faction are brave, for example, and serve as the warrior class, protecting the city. Abnegation members are selfless and run the government, Candor are devoted to honesty and run the courts, Amity value goodwill and tend farms, and Erudite cherish intelligence and serve as teachers and doctors.
During an annual ceremony, 16-year-olds are tested to see which faction they fit in best and then have the option to abide or choose a new faction for life. Our heroine, Beatrice "Tris" Prior, played by Shailene Woodley, learns that she does not fit neatly into one faction because she's in fact Divergent a secret she must conceal for her own survival.
The Hunger Games comparison:
"Divergent" has frequently been compared to The Hunger Games films and it's not hard to see why. Both book series and now filmare set in rigidly ordered postapocalyptic dystopias. Both feature annual ceremonies with fateful repercussions for young people. Both focus on fiercely independent young women who rebel against the strictures of their societies. And in the film world, both had debut entries come out in March, with planned sequels to follow. It would seem as though Lionsgate clearly has high hopes for "Divergent," with "Insurgent" and "Allegiant" films, based on eponymous Roth novels, already slated for March 2015 and 2016.
The Official Trailer For Divergent:
In second place this weekend is the Muppets Most Wanted, it grossed $4.7 Million Dollars on Friday. This film marks the eighth motion picture appearance by Jim Henson's Legendary Muppets. Muppets Most Wanted should do well with families this weekend, and could take in more than $20 million by Sundays end.
